Denver Water has taken a firm stance on water conservation, issuing a significant number of citations for violations of current water restrictions. According to CBS News, 450 homeowners and businesses have been cited for not adhering to the established rules, highlighting the critical need for compliance in drought-prone areas. This crackdown serves as a stark reminder that water is a precious resource, and responsible usage is paramount. For residents in the Denver area, the immediate practical step this week is to thoroughly review their current outdoor watering schedules. Ensure that watering is occurring only on designated days and times, and that sprinkler systems are not running during restricted hours or during rainfall. Beyond simply checking schedules, homeowners should also inspect their irrigation systems for any leaks or inefficiencies. A simple walk-through can reveal broken sprinkler heads, misaligned sprinklers spraying sidewalks, or dripping hoses that contribute to unnecessary water waste. Addressing these issues promptly can prevent future violations and conserve water. Consider the type of landscaping you have. Drought-tolerant plants require less water and can help reduce overall consumption. If you have extensive lawn areas, explore options for reducing lawn size or transitioning to xeriscaping, which utilizes native and water-wise plants. For homeowners in San Antonio, Texas, facing similar water conservation challenges, it's wise to engage with professionals. When speaking with a licensed, insured landscaping service about your watering needs, ask specific questions such as: 'What are the current watering restrictions in my area, and how can my irrigation system be optimized to meet them?' and 'Can you recommend plant types that are both beautiful and water-efficient for our climate?'
